No way! There is NO WAY a month has gone by since our last Newsletter. ABSOLUTELY NO WAY! Is there? We're having way too much fun! OK, I guess a newsletter should have some news, let's see what we can do to scrape some together.
Oh, here's some juicy stuff. This month's RAC is going to be especially interesting. It involves long white poles and boats, we might even run short of time and forgo picking up trash. Due to the sensitive secret nature of this project, we'll have to keep it classified until the last minute. We may also have to eliminate all participants afterwards to insure secrecy (though our policy committee has yet to pass down a final ruling, some issue concerning the wording of our Waiver).
Be at Spilmans' Landing at... NOT AFTER... AT 9 am. There is no penalty for coming early and helping with equipment setup. Those who have come in the past will recall the remarkable FOOD TABLE Marley sets up. Yow, that's worth the price of admission right there! If you need additional information on how to prepare for this event, you could reference our section below "How to Prepare," though it's mostly worthless as far as content goes. I wish I could get motivated to do that section up right but I'm usually a basket case by the time I type my way that far down the page.
Hey, what the heck is going on in the photo above? ...must be something in the water.
Jiminy Crickets, this month has been one big explosion of news and activity. Where to start? We received our first GRANT! The University Neighborhoods Coalition, "a coalition of Neighborhood Associations and representatives of Business, Faith, Schools along with other interested parties near Downtown San Jose that are working to improve the neighborhoods which surround San Jose State University" (whew) got wind of what we were doing (mostly, because we told them) and their Board voted to approve our grant proposal in which we asked for a SIGNIFICANT amount of money for a variety of FoCC projects. Don't worry, absolutely NONE OF THAT MONEY is going to support this newsletter so don't get your undies in a bunch. Thank you UNC, we will do remarkable things with the seeds you have sewn.
Through the intercession of a greater power than us, we have achieved a 501(c)3 status (of sorts). For those behind on their IRS rule book, 501(c)3 is the tax code that allows tax exemption for donations. YOU may now donate money to Friends of Coyote Creek and use that donation as a tax write off. Contact us for details or wire your donation to the editor via his off shore bank account (number to follow). None of this would have occurred without the assistance of Ken Podgorsek and the Naglee Park Campus Community Association Board of Directors. Sorry people if you don't live in this community, these people are WAY above the rest of us when it comes to making a community a GREAT PLACE to LIVE!

You know about guardian angles? We have a few and we
want to mention one here. Larry (Lawrence) Johmann, stand up and take a
bow. If you think we make this look fun and easy (which, no doubt, you
don't) then it's thanks to the guidance Larry has given us as we
navigate the maze of organizations and policies attempting to grasp the
essentials and move our group forward (read: Really really smart guy,
generous with his time, beyond human accountability and doesn't back
down, no way, no where, no how.) What a guy! There is absolutely no way
we can express our gratitude to Larry, so I'm not even going to insult
him by delivering the case of beer I was authorized to purchase. I'll
just get rid if it and save Larry the embarrassment. (no prob Larry,
glad to help out!)
| News Flash: FoCC Restoration Weekend |
For those of you who follow this newsletter on a monthly basis, get help. Also, you might recall last month we showed a photo of a trash raft downstream of the Julian Street Bridge. A good portion of that trash raft broke free this month (or was cut free, we don't know) and took the "Marathon" out of our Trash Pick-Up. We put together an alternate plan that goes further with less and does more. How did we do it? Beats me! On May 15 and 16, FoCC will sponsor the "Friends of Coyote Creek Restoration Weekend." We will have food, music (well, I'll be humming at least) and if time allows, will pick up trash from the Creek.
Pay attention. THIS, not that over there, look HERE... THIS is it. THE, T... H... E... call to action. You know, the one you always said they didn't give, the one you'll swear you never saw. This is IT. The notice that you need to call, wait... NEED might not convey the proper sense of urgency and alarm, let's try this route: PANIC!!! IF YOU DON'T CALL (293-5278) OR EMAIL LORI RIGHT NOW TO VOLUNTEER FOR A SHIFT, THE WORLD MAY NOT SURVIVE!!! Well, that might begin to suggest your orientation on the topic. Without YOU calling in to volunteer for a shift for the weekend of May 15 to 16, it may only be me sitting next to a barbecue pit (did we mention the all day barbecue and the party starting at 8 pm and the moonlight wine and cheese boat ride) wondering how the heck a vegan is going to dispose of all that meat.

the whole planet. - Jose A. Lutzenberged
- In one respect every natural area has a common
uniqueness--it takes everyone forever to preserve it, but one person
and one time to destroy it. - E. J. Koestner

You can't. This is such a mind numbing demonstration
of society's acceptance of responsibility for the near annihilation of
an entire ecological biosphere and the hands on approach to recover,
restore and repair the resultant damage that only an exceptional mind
could comprehend the selfless extension of the soul such an act must
represent. Other than that, we recommend the night before you avoid
beans and other foods that might cause flatulence.
Are you coming this Sunday (5/2/04)? Please RSVP with a YES or a MAYBE
if you think you will be attending. RSVP'ing is not required, but it
will help us in planning.
(RSVP by clicking on the "yes" or "maybe" email links above or by calling Marley at 292-8171)
